My Life, My values
Personal values are something which we develop through the course of life and they can change over time for sure. This essay will look at my personal values, how they were shaped through the course of my life and the influence on my view of society.
Values are those things that are important, meaningful and valued by an individual, a group of people or an organization. Values have major influence on a person’s behavior and attitude and serve as broad guidelines in all situations. Situations occur when values are put into question and prioritizing must occur. We as a community consider values as important because they reflect our personal morals, shape our behavior and guide us through long life journeys. Since we live in a society which is highly connected through various means, a value in a person doesn’t just affect the person individually but affects the society as a whole. Personal values as well as ethics are important characteristics of an individual. They just define who we are and what we believe.
Each individual has a different set of values which according to him/her are important. It is different from one another because a value is determined by many factors such as life experience, culture, religion, environment and family background. Values are developed in several ways, and my personal values have been developed through my upbringing, living situations, education and work experience. All of these factors have led to my personal values being what they are today. The way I was raised up plays a very crucial role in development of my personal values. My grandmother would never let me get away without having manners and this has led me to value politeness and manners. The values of my family influenced my upbringing which influenced my personal values. Education has had a very strong impact on my personal values as well. Education provides you with knowledge to make your own opinions.
I personally have many values. Some of my most important values consist of my family, my ethnicity, integrity and my memories. Something that I value the most would be my family. Family means the most to me and there are somethings they have taught me that will be there with me all my life. Family members teach each other, serve one another and share life’s joys and sorrows. Families provide a setting for personal growth. Family is the single most important influence in a child’s life. Not everyone has a perfect family therefore i must appreciate what I have, as everybody isn’t as lucky as I am who has a family that cares for each other through out all the difficult situations .
I also value relationships with people a lot. Life would be really very different if I didn’t had a good relationship with people. In my family I am taught that no matter what happens, people will always be there for me if I have a good and meaningful relation with them. When coming across people who have total different opinions from mine, I always act respectfully. It is usually the first thing the person notices that how you are treating him/her, as well as others who doesn’t belong to your social status. My elders have taught me that we should always treat people respectfully and not do any discrimination amongst them on the basis of caste, religion, class. Everybody in our society deserves equal respect. If you have a good relation with people, they will not only help you in your bad times but will also respect you at the same time. I learned concepts of respect as a child as my parents were teaching me to observe boundaries. They wanted me to respect my room, and keep it clean, and they explained to me how they respected my personal space and how should I respect theirs.
Integrity is a personal value of importance because it means to live in respect to personal values. This require standing up for your beliefs and living by them. People who demonstrate integrity draw others to them because they are trustworthy and dependable. They are principled and you can count on them to behave in honorable ways even when no one is watching or even knows about their performance. Integrity is important to me because I believe it is important for people to hold themselves responsible for their actions and beliefs In big ways and small ways, in visible or invisible situations, people always have the opportunity to demonstrate their integrity every single day.
Memory is the mental capacity or faculty of retaining and reviving facts, events, impressions, etc., or of recalling or recognizing previous experiences. I value my memory as it reminds me of all the good and bad things and events that have happened to me. Bad events and things always taught me something, things which I can do to avoid them in future. Good events also gave me some wonderful memories about which I can think when I feel miserable or during the difficult phases of my life. Moments that will never come again, will always remain in the memory of that very person. There would be no point in life if there was no memory, for what would be the reason for continuing to live without a memory of people and things that are so precious to you. The best thing about memories is that no one can take away another’s memory and it stays within the person itself till his/her last breath.
Values of an individual depends highly on the community and surroundings he/she is brought up in. Like an individual who is brought up in a conservative family will have values very different than the one who was brought up in a relatively liberal family as The family is the main agent of socialization. An individual who was brought up in a conservative family is usually less open and more disciplined in comparison to an individual who was brought up in a liberal family. Parents in a conservative family usually have a tendency to keep an eye on their child, what is he doing, with whom he is doing it etc.. It can have both positive as well as negative impact on the child. It is possible that the child doesn’t mind their parents keeping an eye on them and as a result does well in their life. But It can also have a negative impact if the child doesn’t like his/her parents interfering in everything.
In my case, I belong to a liberal family, my parents always kept eyes on me but upto a certain limit as according to them “A watched pot never boils.” I also never broke their trust and have been a very good studios child. I’ve learnt most of the values such as dependability, reliability, loyalty, commitment, open-mindedness, consistency, and efficiency from my parents.
