In the United States, the Emancipation Proclamation was a well-known document. The document was created to abolish slavery from all confederate states. The Union, who were content with opposing slavery had three runaway slaves and the General Benjamin Butler named them “contrabands”. Contrabands were slaves who ran away from their plantations. Plantations that were so strict to slaves that if they tried to run away they will not be allowed to go back. The Radical Republicans became so furious with the slaves treatment that they formed two Confiscation Acts. The first act dealt with opposing slavery and asking Congress to end slavery despite the compensation from their owners. According to page 435 in the textbook, the Radical Republicans formed the second Confiscation Act, which declared “forever free” the thousands of refugee slaves and all slaves captured by the Union army. Emancipation had become an instrument of war. However, President Abraham Lincoln rejected emancipation as a war goal. He felt that emancipation should be focused on freeing the slaves only. So, that they can live normally and be treated as people instead of wild animals. According to page 435 in the textbook, Secretly, the president drafted a general proclamation of emancipation in July 1862. He began to test the waters in his public statements.”If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it,” he wrote to Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune,” and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it.” President Lincoln wanted to reassure the White Americans that slaves are people too. They want to live normally as humans. Humans that can make a difference in their lives and in their children. Later, Lincoln did a final Emancipation Proclamation which was issued on January 1, 1863. Unlike the first proclamation, the second one dealt with abolishing slavery for good. Lincoln had to wait before any slave was free from slavery. As stated on page 436 in the textbook, Yet, as abolitionist Wendell Phillips argued, Lincoln’s proclamation had moved to slavery to “the edge of Niagara, ready to sweep it over the brink. Advancing Union troops became agents of slavery’s destruction. Lincoln knew that day the South needed a change. The South was so consume with slavery that they forgot about their freedom. That can be focused on once the South is destroyed and replaced with new ideas.
