Flavonoids found in foods may contribute to this beneficial impact of diet

Flavonoids found in foods may contribute to this beneficial impact of diet (7). Flavonoids are characterized by a common skeleton of diphenylpropane, placed in a number of classes, such as flavonols, flavones, flavanones, flavan-3-ols (7), are commonly found in fruits, vegetables, herbs and teas (7). There is evidence that flavonoids with their antioxidant properties might reduce low density lipoproteins (LDL) (8). Furthermore, flavonoids also ameliorate the blood vessel endothelium by reducing the risk of clot formation due to their anti-aggregating properties (8). However, meta-analyses and observational prospective studies that explored the association of flavonoid intake with all-cause, cancer and CVD mortality are lacking and the available data is controversial (7, 9-23)
